SANTA CRUZ CALIFORNIA *Please note that this is a courtesy listing. Peak is in the care of Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter* Peak came to us having roamed a property outside independently with two small dogs. She was not accustomed to being touched or walking on a leash. We have gotten her used to these things. She will now lean in and sometimes lie on her side for petting and scratching. She enjoys sniffing and sunning outside. She walks on leash and has begun running around our fenced yards. As an Anatolian Shepherd, she is a livestock guardian breed, but she did not grow up working with livestock. She is likely to bark deeply to protect her territory, but otherwise tends to be quiet. Between her breed and how she grew up, she is not a life of the party type of dog. She tends to do things very slowly, like the speed dial on life has been turned back, so her human will need to be patient with her. Force is counterproductive. There will be aspects of life that scare her. High value treats (we've used pieces of meatball!) and walking with another dog are ways to help her get used to these things. Peak guards her kennel from other dogs, but has not been leash-reactive and has been playful and sometimes reticent with other dogs. Peak will need secure containment and her adopter should have researched and ideally have experience with Anatolian Shepherds. She is not a city girl! She is suited to the country or mountains. If you are interested in Peak, please e-mail or call to schedule to meet her with our behavior & training coordinator Carla at carla.braden@santacruzcounty.
