Where Are They Now

NASRN has worked to place numerous ASDs into new homes.  While some are working and some are companions, they are all new beginnings for the dogs and owners.

November, 2002

Buddy (aka "Couch Potato") --  "Buddy", aka "Couch Potato", was adopted at 4 years old from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, after a previous family gave him up.  He was very skinny at the time and has put on a lot of weight since he was adopted. Currently Buddy resides with his "grandparents" on a hobby farm in Newton, Wisconsin. His hobbies include sleeping on the couch and truck/car rides.  Buddy will be moving in with his mom and dad who live in Madison as soon as they have a place for him.

Khan (now Chewie, short for Chewbacca on Star Wars) was adopted on November 11, 2002.  Chewie's new family was looking for an ASD after the loss of their first ASD, Rusty, who had a stroke and passed away in October. Chewie traveled from Colorado to Buffalo, MN, where he now lives with his forever family, including 5 children aged 9,7,6,4 and 2. He was rescued by his foster Mom after seeing an ad in the paper for 'free Anatolians' the original owner was going to 'gas him and his sister' if she didn't find anyone to take them.
When Chewie was adopted, he was very scared and had been abused.  He has now learned to trust his new family and is becoming the very loving normal Anatolian dog that they were hoping for. He no longer panics at the sight of his leash or a hand on his collar. He is truly enjoying his new life in Minnesota as a family pet/guardian.

September, 2002
Buck was rescued from the Norwich, CT. Dog Pound on September 4, 2002. Buck had been found wandering in a park in Norwich with no ID tags. After being adopted, Buck moved to his new home in Granby, CT.  Buck is a male approximately one year old, 29" at the shoulder and 100 pounds (and still growing!).
Buck was in good health when he was rescued and shows no signs of abuse or mistreatment. Like many adopted dogs, he displayed aggressive behavior issues but with a remarkable trainer, time and patient new parents, Buck is now a reliable, confident and consistently well behaved dog. Buck lives with four other dogs (three Chinooks and a Newfoundland-Rottweiler cross).  Not to be outdone by the other dogs, Buck is now a regular part of a sled team!

August, 2002

Harry arrived in Tallahassee, FL, on August 10, 2002, after a long road trip from the Houston, TX, area where he was rescued from a shelter and fostered for several months.  Harry's new parents were looking for an ASD after having done a lot of research on the breed and wanting an older dog.  It was love at first sight when his new family met him at a rest stop on I-10 in Pensacola, where he was delivered by wonderful volunteers.  He bonded with his mom immediately and now spends his days guarding Penny and his house from various neighborhood cats (evil cats) and squirrels (slightly less evil, but still a threat) and his nights snuggled in his bed.  He weighed around 75 lbs. on his first visit to the vet and now weighs 95 lbs.  He has completed basic obedience and is a joy.  He has become much more confident and is truly a handsome dog.  His family can't imagine life without Harry, and is already talking about adopting a female to keep him company.

Leydi (Leydi Bug) was adopted August 24, 2002.  She was found in a shelter in Kilgore, Texas, and had been dumped earlier in the week two days before she delivered 12 puppies.  Six of her babies died immediately and the other 6 were put down because Leydi did not have a drop of milk and the shelter could not bottle feed them. Leydi was scheduled to be put down in the kill-shelter, and she was a very, very sick girl compounded by the fact she had just given birth. She was weak and weighed 52 lbs and could barely stand.  She had been a street dog and was starved physically and also starved for love and affection. Within two days of finding Leydi in the shelter, she was in Arkansas with her new Mom.  She now weighs 85 pounds and romps and plays with her four 'boys' who have also been rescued over the past 10 years.

May, 2002
Anna was rescued by her foster Mom from an Ohio shelter where she had been turned in by her owners because she wasn't "mean" enough.  She was a scarce 56 lbs, very shy and reserved.  Her first two years of life had been on the end of a chain outside in the elements with very little human interaction.  After a couple of months in foster care she moved to Kansas City to be with her new family, a male ASD mix rescue and 2 cats.  She immediately took control of everyone and settled in as boss of her new home.  Her foster family still visits every other month and she loves the visits but hides when they start to leave.  She doesn't want to leave her new home, her new playmate and her forever Mom.

Ruby was rescued by answering a classified ad in a livestock newspaper "ASD cross puppies, $50 and free" in Port Lavaca TX.  Her previous owners were in poor health and were "getting rid" of all of their animals.  Ruby was about 3 years old at the time she was adopted, and since moving in with her new family, she has learned to play and romp with the other three dogs she now lives with.  She has taken on the responsibility of an entire farm, specializing in protecting the goats.  She slips in and out of the stock fence gates to go where she is needed.  Her main post is either on the hill or on the front porch which overlooks the entrance to the farm.
