"I thought the Anatolian was bred to be a livestock guardian! So why is this dog not available for this job??"
Yes, the Anatolian Shepherd has been bred to be a livestock guardian dog, "however", not every Anatolian is a born "working dog".
Some dogs take to the job quickly and turn out to be excellent LGD's (Livestock Guardian Dog). However, other dogs are more fond of people and do not have any interest in staying with a herd or flock.
These dogs are better suited to being a companion dog.
Other dogs have come to us from "failed" working homes, meaning their original owner had tried to use them as a working dog but the dog was either chasing the animals, or hurting them or just wouldn't stay with the stock. So these dogs are also better suited to a companion home.
A large number of our rescues come to us with no background, so we have no idea what animals the dog might have been raised with or not raised with. If we are not able to test/evaluate these dogs with livestock, we cannot adopt them out to do a job that they may not be suited for.
If we adopted out a dog that was not trained with livestock and it hurt the new owner's stock, the dog would have to be returned to rescue and rehomed once again. We dont like to shuffle our dogs around any more than we have to, so we try to make the adoption a good match on the first try.
In the best interest of the dog, it is our policy to not adopt a dog to a working home unless we know the dog is suitable for the job.
Thank you for your understanding.
