Gypsy

January 1996 – March 2007

Sweet, sweet Gypsy.

Gypsy came to us in February of 2004.  She and her companion Bullet were given up by their owners because of their age.  Gypsy had so many litters of pups that her breasts hung to the ground and she had tumors all over her chest.  Luckily the tumors were benign and my husband and I, after receiving a call from our Director, Carleen, happily drove from Southwest Texas to Lake Charles, Louisiana to rescue them.

Both Gypsy and Bullet had been working LGDs all their lives and happily moved into our goat pasture and made themselves at home.  They were happy there for about two months and then we found them lying on the porch at the house most of the day and night!  We decided they should retire and enjoy the final years of their lives.  They both became loveable porch potatoes.

I believe Gypsy must be the dog that the “Anatolian Lean” was named after!  She would go up to everyone and lay her head and neck on their legs until they almost fell over from the weight!  Gypsy was a “tiny” 125 lbs.  Gypsy never met a stranger; she loved everyone and greeted anyone and everyone that came to the ranch.  It was a good thing that we had 4-6 other ASDs on the ranch at all times or we may have been invaded!  Everyone who met her wanted to take her home because she was so affectionate.  Gypsy was truly a gentle giant who loved every critter on our farm (except skunks, she killed a number of them).  She would let the baby barn kittens climb all over her and sleep on her back and on top of her head.  When the Nanny’s were having their babies you could always find Gypsy down at the pasture helping to clean the new little ones up.  I think the new moms appreciated the help, especially when there were triplets!

Gypsy had the distinct honor of being a Rescue of the Month with her picture and a little paragraph about her.  We felt honored to have our big girl on the web page.  We had Gypsy for 3 short years but I believe she enjoyed those 3 years as much as we did.  She is painfully missed by our family and her life long mate, Bullet.
